Food Diary: Perak Road Trip

This is my first experience to Perak and special thanks to Asma for bringing me to awesome foodie places. Check this out:

Our first stop was at RnR somewhere, I ate Mee Wantan and it tastes good. The soy sauce blends nicely with the mee, especially it is prepared by Chinese Muslim kiosk. (I love with the Chinese food, some tasted pretty amazing!) Let’s skip the Mee Wantan and move to the REAL food.

1)  Nasi Vanggey, Restaurant Nasi Vanggey, Ipoh

We came here around 3 pm and the choices of dishes wasn’t that much. But, still, we managed to indulge the tasty Nasi Vanggey. For me, the kuah is quite spicy and it almost the same as Nasi Kandar. The distinctive feature of Nasi Vanggey probably due to Sambal Kelapa, one at the bottom. It is a mixture of sweet, spicy and tasty and eat together with the rice and other lauks. The Bergedil Udang also tastes good. A wonderful experience to repeat.

2) Rainbow Cheese Toast, KUMA, Concubie Lane, Pekan Lama Ipoh

Next, we moved to renowned Rainbow Cheese Toast, Kuma at Pekan Lama. This was the most awaiting moment since it went viral on Facebook. I amazed at the elasticity and imagine how long we could stretch it and Instagram it via Boomerang. But, naah! The toast just broke into two before we even start taking the picture. For me, it tasted just as plain cheese toast, but it is recommended for the aesthetic appearance. (Plus, it’s quite pricey, around RM17++)

3) Putu Perak

This steam cake is made of rice flour and filled with palm sugar and grated coconut. A big difference of Putu Perak and other putu is the filling. For ordinary putu, the filling is just the palm sugar while here, palm sugar and grated coconut resemble the filling of kuih gulung.

4) ABC and Laksa Telur Sarang Warung Telaga

ABC or Ais Batu Kacang, is a dessert made of shaved ice topped with seeds and peanuts. Nothing new, but due to hot scorching weather, this feels extremely good on my tongue. You can feel the sweetness melt in your mouth and you just savouring it for yourself.

For the Laksa Telur Sarang, there’s a burst of unusual flavours in my mouth. At first, I kept wondering what is the “sarang” or nest. I imagine laksa being serve in bird nest (haha). But, actually it’s traditional laksa or rice noodles in tangy spicy fish gravy topped with crispy nest-shaped omelette. It is garnished with cucumber, flaked fish and chilli for the extra kick.

5) Mi Udang aka Prawn Mee and Nasi Goreng Udang, Mee Udang Mak Jah

With many chairs and tables provided, surrounding with village ambience, Mee Udang Mak Jah is well-known place for the tourists. No wonder it become so well-known, the prawns are big and the quantity is quite reasonable: At least 5 prawns in the mee or nasi or any dishes! Flavourful gravy served with thumb size prawns is really a must in Taiping! This lip-smacking dish is sweet with a spicy reddish-brown broth. It has a pleasant prawn taste, and is thickened with cornstarch. Freshly-cut chilli is sprinkled on top of the huge prawns with chopped coriander and fried shallots to enhance the flavour.

For the Nasi Goreng Udang, I couldn't elaborate more as I taste a bit from Asmah. But, definitely it's good J

6) Strawberry Gelato, Daily Fresh

RnR Tapah was our final stop before heading back to KL. Tell you what, I totally rambang mata with all the food sold here, so many varieties and they look nyummy (confession of foodholic). The gelato is nice, not so sweet, not so plain. A good ice cream taste for my taste bud.

I guess this wouldn’t be our last visit. There’s a lot to discover soon!

PS: I couldn’t contain myself anymore. I’m hungry and MUST grab some food downstairs. Bye!
